I went to San Diego one summer with my family, and it was one of those rare trips where everyone found something they loved. The weather is nearly perfect, the food scene is incredible, and there’s always a balance between relaxation and adventure.
Honestly, I just love it. I’d go back in a heartbeat with friends or my husband. Every time I think of the seals at La Jolla Cove or the smell of tacos in the air, I start mentally planning my return.
Beaches, the Zoo, and a (Slightly Humbling) Surf Lesson
I am not and never have been a zoo person. But one of my favorite days on that trip was the one we spent at the San Diego Zoo. It’s one of the best in the world, and it’s totally worth setting aside the time to explore. We wandered for hours and still didn’t see it all. It still became a core memory, though.
Later in the trip, my sister and I signed up for surfing lessons. I won’t lie…she was way better at it than I was. I spent more time laughing and falling than actually surfing. If you’re looking for something a little more peaceful (or balanced), I’d honestly recommend stand-up paddleboarding instead. It’s still active, but it’s more relaxing and gives you time to soak up the views.
We also spent time at the beach, tried a bunch of different taco spots, and watched the seals lounging on the rocks at La Jolla Cove. One thing I didn’t get to do on that trip was go on a whale watching cruise. I’ve done it on other coastal getaways and highly recommend it if you have time. It’s such a unique way to connect with nature and see the ocean from a whole new perspective.
Wandering, Neighborhoods, and Really Good Food
One of the things I love about San Diego is how easy it is to explore on foot, especially in Little Italy. We spent an afternoon wandering through local shops, grabbing coffee, and people-watching. It’s the kind of neighborhood that makes you want to slow down and stay a while. If you have time before dinner, I definitely recommend heading there to explore.
And the food… wow. From fresh seafood to street tacos, there’s no shortage of incredible meals. I still think about the tacos we grabbed straight from the airport and the sunset that followed right after.
Planning Your Own San Diego Getaway?
If San Diego is on your list, I put together a 3-Day San Diego Travel Guide based on my own experience. It’s the same suggestions I’d give my friends or family if they were headed there. It is just organized into a digital format that makes it easier to plan.
Inside the guide, you’ll find:
✅ A daily itinerary with realistic pacing and customizable plans
✅ Clickable links to book hotels, tours, and restaurants
✅ A travel prep checklist, packing tips, and a simple budget tracker
✅ Journal and notes pages to make it your own
You can use it right from your phone, tablet, or laptop. You can also print it out if you’re someone who likes to write things down.
