Whenever friends or family visit me in North Carolina, I always find an excuse to take them to Asheville. It’s such an easy weekend trip. It’s close enough to feel doable, but packed with enough charm, food, and mountain views to feel like a real getaway.
Honestly, I just love it. It’s one of those places I never get tired of. I’ve been with my husband, with girlfriends, with family… and every trip feels a little different.
Breweries, Biltmore, and a Breath of Fresh Air
My go-to Asheville weekend almost always includes a brewery hop (or two). Asheville’s beer scene is one of the best in the South. It’s super walkable and full of local spots with great vibes. If it’s someone’s first time, I love doing a Downtown Asheville Guided Brewery Walking Tour so you can try a bunch of different places without worrying about who’s driving.
And if they’ve never been to the Biltmore Estates (make sure to reserve timeslot ahead of time), that’s a non-negotiable. The mansion, the gardens, the views… it’s one of those places that actually lives up to the hype. I’ve been multiple times and still find new corners to explore. It’s a whole experience.
At some point, I also try to sneak in a little time on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Even a short hike makes you feel like you’ve really been in the mountains. I usually go for something easy and scenic, like Craggy Gardens Hike. It’s not too intense, but the views are incredible.
Downtown Must-Dos: Pinball and the Friday Night Drum Circle
I always block out a few hours to wander around downtown Asheville. Grab a coffee, pop into the local shops, maybe pick up a candle or something I don’t need but definitely want.
And if it’s a Friday night between April and October, the Asheville Drum Circle in Pritchard Park is a must. It’s one of those weird and wonderful things Asheville does so well. People drumming, dancing, and just vibing out together. It’s totally free and always draws a fun crowd.
Also, if you need to kill time before dinner or wait out the rain, don’t sleep on the Asheville Pinball Museum (first come, first served). You pay a flat fee and get unlimited play on retro pinball machines and old-school arcade games. It’s random, it’s fun, and somehow it always ends up being a highlight.
Where I Always Eat (and Bring Everyone Back To)
There are so many restaurants in Asheville, but these are the ones I actually return to. That says a lot coming from me because I’m usually trying new spots:
🍳 Sunny Point Café – One of my favorite Asheville restaurants with hearty Southern-style breakfasts. Expect a wait, but it is worth it!
🌮 White Duck Taco Shop – Always fun and affordable. Their taco flavors are so creative.
🍝 Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian – Cozy, nostalgic, and so satisfying. The garlic knots are a must.
🦪 The Oyster House Brewing Company – Great happy hour oyster deals and a casual vibe perfect for seafood lovers looking for a tasty, budget-friendly meal. (I am not a seafood fan, but I always make a stop here because the non-seafood options are great too!)
Planning Your Own Asheville Trip?
If you’re thinking about heading to Asheville, whether it’s your first time or you’re going back for more, I put together a 3-Day Asheville Travel Guide to make planning easier. It’s based on the exact trips I’ve taken, plus a few extras I wish I had time for on earlier visits.
Inside the guide, you’ll find:
✅ Clickable booking links for hotels, tours, and restaurants
✅ A daily itinerary with realistic pacing and suggested timing
✅ Travel checklists, a packing guide, and a simple budget tracker
✅ Notes and journal pages for your own reflections
You can use it right on your phone, tablet, or laptop. Or print it out if you’re someone who likes to write things down.

It’s pretty, practical, and takes the stress out of planning. From brewery stops to mountain overlooks, it’s the same suggestions I give my own friends and family when they visit.
And if you end up drinking a local IPA while watching a drum circle after a hike on the Parkway… well, that’s Asheville.
