Even for quick trips within the U.S., a little planning ahead can make all the difference. Here’s my go-to checklist for a stress-free departure and an easier return home—because no one wants to come back to chaos and an empty fridge.
1. Print + Share Your Itinerary
I always print out confirmations for flights, hotels, car rentals, and any scheduled activities and carry the documents in a folder in my carry-on. It’s great backup if your phone dies or there’s no service. I also email a copy to someone I trust—just for safety.
2. Book a Pet Sitter with Rover
I use Rover to find a reliable sitter for my cat. For years, I would hit up friends for cat sitting, but I find Rover gives me an affordable way to find a pet sitter without straining my relationships. Whether I need overnight stays or drop-ins, I love knowing my cat (Amaretto) is being cared for by someone who’s been reviewed and vetted. I leave detailed care notes and usually try to schedule a meet-and-greet beforehand if I have never used the sitter.

3. Make Sure Cards & IDs Are Ready
I double-check that my debit and credit cards are working and not expiring soon. I also confirm that I’ve packed my driver’s license, health insurance card, and any membership cards I might need.
4. Refill Prescriptions & Pack a Small Health Kit
I make sure to bring enough medication to last my whole trip—and a few extra days just in case— I have been burned by this before… I also try to remember to pack pain relievers, allergy meds, motion sickness pills, and a few band-aids. A mini pharmacy saves you from those late-night CVS runs.
5. Download Travel Apps & Save Offline Info
I download airline apps, event tickets, and maps—and save important info (like hotel addresses and check-in instructions) in my Google Keep app or as screenshots, in case I can’t access email or Wi-Fi.
6. Set an Out-of-Office Reply & Tie Up Loose Ends
Even if it’s just a long weekend, I like to set an auto-reply on my email and make sure I’m not leaving anything urgent hanging at work. It helps me unplug and truly enjoy the time away.
7. Take Out the Trash, Change the Sheets, & Clean the Fridge
Before I leave, I toss any perishables, take out the trash, and change my sheets. It’s one of those simple things that makes coming home 10x better—no odors, no spoiled food, no regrets.
8. Unplug Electronics & Adjust the Thermostat
I unplug small appliances, power strips, and chargers before heading out, and I adjust the thermostat to save energy while I’m gone.
9. Pause Deliveries or Ask a Neighbor/Friend to Help
If I’m expecting any packages, I either pause them or ask a neighbor/friend to grab them while I’m gone. A little coordination goes a long way—and I always offer to return the favor when they travel.
10. Back Up My Phone & Laptop
It only takes a few minutes to back up my devices, and it gives me total peace of mind—especially since I’m always taking photos on the go! I have been on a couple of trips where a travel companion has dropped or lost their phone. It can be a trip-ruiner if everything isn’t backed up beforehand.
11. Weigh My Bag & Check Airline Policies
Even for short flights, I like to weigh my suitcase and check baggage rules (especially with budget airlines). It saves time and avoids surprise fees at the gate.
12. Prep the Car if It’s a Road Trip
If I’m driving, I check the oil, tire pressure, gas level, and pack emergency essentials (jumper cables, snacks, water, phone charger). Nothing is worse than having to stop for an oil change mid-trip!
13. Review My GreenChef Order
One of my favorite travel hacks? Making sure my GreenChef box is scheduled to arrive right after I get home. That way, I don’t have to worry about grocery shopping or takeout fatigue—I can ease back into my routine with healthy, easy meals waiting for me.
