What’s in My Bag for a National Park Trip: My Must-Have Hiking Essentials

One of my favorite parts of any national park trip is the ritual of packing my bag—figuring out what gear I actually need and making sure I’ve got the essentials (plus a few fun extras). Over the years and lots of trail time, I’ve figured out what works best for me. So if you’re curious what I always throw in my backpack before heading out, here’s a peek inside! 🧃 Liquid I.V.

Hydration is something I constantly struggle with, especially on long hikes. I’ve started bringing Liquid I.V. packets with me and adding them to water at lunch or dinner. I don’t mix them in my Lifestraw bottle or CamelBak—just a regular water bottle when I need a little boost.

📓 National Park Passport Book

This was a wedding gift from friends, and it’s easily one of my favorite things to bring on any park trip. We love stopping by visitor centers to get a stamp—such a simple way to make each trip feel even more special.

🧴 Sunscreen

As an oncology nurse, sunscreen is absolutely non-negotiable for me. I always keep it in my bag and reapply often. You’ll never catch me on a trail without it these days (the younger me needed to learn some lessons).

🚰 Lifestraw Water Bottle

If there’s even a chance the water might be questionable, I bring this along for peace of mind. It’s saved me more than once, and it doesn’t take up much space.

🦝 Raccoon Hat

Is it necessary? No. Do I bring it anyway? Every time. I have a couple now (the first one I bought as a gift for my roommate and then kept for myself—typical) and they’ve kind of become my personality. They fit the park vibe, and honestly, they make me happy.

🦟 Bug Spray

I get eaten alive without this. It’s one of those things I’ve forgotten once and never again. Absolute must-pack.

💦 CamelBak Bladder

This is my go-to hydration setup for actual hiking. It’s so convenient to sip as I go, and I don’t have to stop and dig through my bag every time I’m thirsty.

🥾 Vasque Boots (Men’s)

I’ve had these boots for almost 7 years, and they’ve been with me through so many adventures—around the world and even during our wedding first look hike. They’ve held up beautifully (with a few new laces over the years) and I still love them.

🍖 Beef Jerky

High-protein, easy to pack, and it never melts. A solid classic trail snack.

🍎 That’s It Bars

These are newer to my lineup but have quickly become a staple. I love that they’re simple and made with real fruit. They’re super easy to toss in my pack and go.

🩹 Medical Kit

I didn’t always bring one, but now I definitely do. As I’ve gotten older (and a little wiser), I’ve realized it’s just smart to have one. Personally, I picked a well-organized kit with everything I could think of needing—just in case.

🧦 Darn Tough Socks

My favorite hiking socks for years. They’re super comfortable, hold up well, and come with a lifetime guarantee. What more could you want?

🔦 Headlamp

This used to be the thing I always forgot and then always regretted not bringing. So now I don’t hike without it. Even if I’m not planning to be out late, it gives me peace of mind.

Whether I’m off to a new park or heading back to a favorite trail, these are the things that make the trip smoother, more fun, and a little more me. I hope this helps you as you prep for your next national park adventure!
