From Flexible Shifts to a 9-to-5: How My Travel Planning Changed

When I transitioned from working night shift hours to a Monday-Friday 9-5 schedule, my travel habits had to change—big time. Gone were the days of booking spontaneous mid-week getaways or taking advantage of off-peak travel days. But while the shift in routine required some adjustment, it also taught me how to make the most of my weekends and limited vacation days. Here’s how I navigated the change and kept my love for travel alive.

Adjusting to the Weekend Warrior Life

With weekends suddenly becoming my primary travel window, I had to get strategic. I quickly learned that maximizing a three-day weekend was key. I started scheduling trips around holidays or taking a Friday or Monday off to create mini-vacations. My go-to trick? Booking the earliest flight out and the latest flight back to squeeze out as much adventure time as possible…the same trick I did when I worked night shift too.

Planning Ahead Became Essential

Gone were the days of last-minute bookings. With a fixed schedule, I had to plan trips well in advance to get the best deals and ensure availability—especially during busy holiday weekends. Now, my calendar is filled months ahead with planned getaways, giving me something to look forward to even during the busiest work weeks.

Choosing Destinations with Care

I started to prioritize destinations that didn’t require a long journey. Quick and/or direct flights or short road trips became my primary way. to travel. I made a list of nearby cities and hidden gems that I could explore over a weekend, helping me satisfy my travel bug without using up my PTO.

Embracing a New Kind of Travel

Switching to a 9-to-5 taught me to appreciate shorter trips and to travel more intentionally. I learned how to pack light(er…), make efficient itineraries, and truly savor each experience, even if it was just a two-day escape. The shift in my work schedule didn’t stop me from exploring; it simply made me a more organized traveler.

Final Thoughts

Adjusting to a Monday-Friday schedule was definitely a change, but it didn’t mean the end of my adventures. It just required a new approach to planning and a little extra creativity. If you’re navigating a similar transition, remember: it’s not about how much time you have; it’s about how you use it.
