What’s In My Bag: Long Flight Must-Haves

There’s something I really love about a long flight — not necessarily the cramped seats or questionable snacks, but that feeling of settling in, unplugging for a bit, and knowing an adventure is waiting on the other side. Over the years (and many travel days), I’ve figured out what I actually need with me to feel comfortable, prepared, and just a little bit more human while flying. Here are my go-to items that always make it into my carry-on for those long travel days. This post contains Amazon affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them—at no extra cost to you. Thanks for supporting my adventures!

📚 Kindle e-reader

I like to rotate between music, movies, and reading during flights. My Kindle is a total game-changer because it’s way lighter than carrying a physical book, and it gives me flexibility — if I’m not vibing with the book I originally packed, I’ve got options.

🪥 Toothbrush + Toothpaste

If you’ve ever had your checked bag not show up (hi, hello, it me), you understand why this is clutch. Even if my luggage does make it, I love having this to freshen up mid-travel — especially after my third airport coffee.

🔋 Portable Chargers (yes, two!)

I pack two portable chargers because I will use them, every time. These ones hold a charge forever and are small enough to toss in my fanny pack. I’ve even charged devices mid-exploring when I’m nowhere near a wall outlet.

🎧 AirPod Max

These are my long flight ride-or-die headphones. Way more comfortable than my regular AirPods, especially if I’m wearing them for hours. Plus, the noise cancellation? Chef’s kiss.

🧖‍♀️ Face Wipes

There’s something about cabin air that makes my face feel… not cute. When I feel the oil or that post-nap blahness, I pull these out. Instantly refreshing.

🍬 Gum

My go-to brand lasts forever and comes through every time. It’s especially handy if you’re sharing with seatmates or fighting altitude ear pops. A small thing that makes a big difference.

🧼 Deodorant

This is another one of those “you’ll thank yourself later” items. Great for quick refreshes during layovers or pre-landing spruce-ups.

🥨 Snack Bag

I once got stuck on the tarmac for hours with no food, and I’ve never fully recovered. Since then, I pack a snack bag like it’s a survival kit. Because sometimes the complimentary pretzels just don’t cut it.

🩴 Birkenstocks

These are my ultimate travel day shoes. Comfy, easy to slip on and off (hello, TSA), and perfect with compression socks. They’re lightweight and double as my go-to sandals for the beach or pool if that’s part of the itinerary.

😴 Eyemask

I’ve tried so many eye masks (years of night shift will do that to you) and finally found one that’s soft, blocks out every bit of light, and doesn’t squish my face. A must for any red-eye or when I’m pretending it’s nighttime even if it’s not.

💧 Lifestraw Water Bottle

I never fly without a water bottle, and this one gives me peace of mind — especially if I’m not sure about the water at my destination. Fill it up post-security and you’re good to go.

🛏 Blow-up Head Pillow

Okay, listen. Blowing this thing up in front of strangers will cost you a little dignity, but it’s worth it. I’ve used this on countless international flights and can sleep in all kinds of weird positions without feeling like I’m being smothered.

🔌 Charger

Self-explanatory but essential. I keep one in my carry-on even if I also have portables — you never know when you’ll have access to an outlet.

🧦 Compression Socks

I’ve seen too many blood clots in my day not to wear these. They’re a struggle to get on (every time is a full-body workout), but the peace of mind is worth the hassle.

What are your non-negotiables when it comes to long flights? Drop them in the comments — I love hearing what other travelers swear by!
